JEAN MICHEL JARRE: DANUBE CONCERT UPDATE

Friendship Bridge (Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge)

MARCH 14TH: Since Jean Michel Jarre's Official Web-Site (www.jarre.net) announced that Jean Michel Jarre had been invited to perform a Concert, by the Bulgarian & Romanian Governments, to celebrate their respective entries into NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) on April 2nd 2004, JARRE UK has been researching the Bulgarian & Romanian Newspapers.

The Romanian Newspaper, Evenimentul Zilei (www.expres.ro), published on March 10th 2004, what appears to be the most detailed Article about the proposed Jean Michel Jarre Concert, that we have so far managed to find. As JARRE UK does not speak Romanian, Leca Radu, a Jean Michel Jarre Fan from Romania, kindly offered to translate the Article for us:-

"JEAN MICHEL JARRE CONCERT ON THE DANUBE
Written
By Gabriela Palade

Romania and Bulgaria are preparing a concert to be held by Jean Michel Jarre, upon the bridge over the Danube, marking the actual entrance of the two states into NATO, announced Lyubomir Todorov, spokesman for the
Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Ministry, quoted by the Novinite Web-Site. The two states are currently collaborating to prepare this event, whose details are to be set in the period to come, Cozmin Dobran, spokesman for the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, declared yesterday, for Mediafax. The actual inclusion into the Northern-Atlantic Alliance shall also be celebrated in the capitals of both states. In Bucharest and Sofia, a series of events will take place, especially concerts.

Officials from the Finance Ministry claim that the funds for the show will be given from the budgets of the Culture & Foreign Affairs Office. The Culture Minister, Razvan Theodorescu, initially declared: "We are involved in the event through the Giurgiu Culture Department", only to then claim that he didn't remember neither the details or who had been the initiator. "I only know I saw a paper regarding this decision and I gave instructions for money to be given through the Giurgiu Culture Department. I didn't sign anything." Razvan Thodorescu declared. He showed willingness to allot 20 to 50 Million Lei (about 500 to 1250 Euros) from the Ministry budget.

Asked if this concert can be considered as a form of electoral campaining, the minister denied: "What do you find electoral to this event?...We deserve a little enjoyment and entertainment! We shouldn't praise our acception into NATO as a victory over imperialism, but we shouldn't keep silence over it either. This is an extraordinary event and should be treated as such
"."

JARRE UK would like to especially thank Leca Radu for translating the above Article for us. Further Articles about the proposed Concert can be found on the Sofia News Agency (Novinite) Web-Site (www.novinite.com) & the Standart News Web-Site (www.standartnews.com), both in English.

PLEASE NOTE: Whether Jean Michel Jarre has accepted this invitation to perform this Concert is still unconfirmed. JARRE UK has contacted Jean Michel Jarre's Management for information, but does not expect to have any information until next week at the earliest...WATCH THIS SPACE!!!
